Some things to know about pepper sprays
Some things to know about pepper sprays.
What is a pepper spray? It is a chemical agent, commonly referred to as tear gas (lacrimatory), with capsaicin (OC, up to 15% content) as its active substance. It is used for incapacitating an opponent and is not a paralyzing gas. Its use by private individuals is only allowed for self-defense purposes. According to the Firearms and Ammunition Act, it is classified as a weapon that does not require a permit and is allowed for individuals over the age of 18.
Effects and consequences:
– causes a strong burning sensation and disorientation
– induces tearing and irritates the respiratory tract
Pepper spray does not cause pain; instead, it incapacitates, preventing further attacks from the aggressor, disorienting them, and discouraging them. It is effective against individuals under the influence of various intoxicants, petty thieves, and other attackers.
Types of pepper sprays:
Aerosol spray / cloud / standard – these products disperse like a deodorant spray, which means extra caution is needed during use. They cannot be used in closed spaces, are sensitive to wind, and have a relatively short range, typically around 2.5 meters.
Gel spray – gel sprays offer significantly better effectiveness, as they cling to the target, producing stronger effects. Its use is more precise, with the emitted stream resembling foam or thick liquid. Wind influence is much lower, making it safer for the user. The range is also doubled, reaching up to 5 meters.
Approximate efficiency:
15 ml: ~ 2 short uses, 2 seconds each
25 ml: ~ 3 short uses, 2 seconds each
60 ml: ~ 4 short uses, 2 seconds each
90 ml: ~ 5 short uses, 2 seconds each
120 ml: ~ 9 short uses, 2 seconds each
Prices and Manufacturers:
15 PLN to 100 PLN
Prices primarily depend on capacity. Interestingly, smaller capacities, such as 15 ml, are often more expensive than 50 ml. This is due to higher production costs. Smaller containers are more complex to produce, which increases expenses.
